4 tips for caring for and maintaining respiratory masks

Respiratory masks

Last update: 17/08/2023

How well do you care for your respiratory mask? Check it, replace it, use it!

It is important to check and maintain your respiratory protection on a regular basis in order to maintain the level of protection, optimise the effective lifetime of the equipment, and avoid additional replacement costs.

Not sure where to begin? We will help you find your way.

1. Understand your responsibilities

In many countries, businesses are legally bound to maintain their reusable PPE and keep a maintenance register. Make sure you know what the law requires so that your care and maintenance policies are legally compliant.

2. Ask for advice from the manufacturer or distributor

Care and maintenance instructions are found in the product’s user instructions.

If you register on vdp.com, you can find all the instructions for our products on the product detail page. Can't find something? Then let us know.

Some manufacturers publish supplementary resources regarding care and maintenance that can also be used to train your team.

3. Think about maintenance when choosing new safety equipment

When selecting new PPE, there are various important factors that must be taken into account, including budget. So, make sure you consider the durability of the product, the availability of replacement parts and the ease of maintaining the device. These factors may be a significant consideration when weighing up the various purchase prices of the products.

4. Don't forget to replace the filters regularly

Respiratory filters do not last forever. It is important to replace these in good time in order to guarantee their effectiveness. Gas and vapour filters begin to let contamination pass through when they become saturated, meaning they are no longer providing effective protection. A saturated particle filter offers some protection but may become clogged, making it harder for the user to breathe. This can lead to tiredness and reduced productivity.

The lifespan of this type of filter can be influenced by a number of factors, including:

  • The type of filter
  • The concentration of contamination in the air
  • The speed of respiration
  • The moisture level
  • The temperature

You are advised to draw up a schedule for replacing filters, with a specific period after which the filters must be replaced. Note: not everyone is authorised to choose filters. They should be selected by an authorised person with expertise in the respiratory risks present in the workplace.
