Filling and re-testing of compressed air cylinders

Why do compressed air cylinders need to be inspected?

It is a legal requirement to have compressed air cylinders that are used for breathing air re-tested every 5 years until the end of their service life.

This requirement applies to both steel and composite cylinders. For older composite cylinders, the time limit may even be set at 3 years.

What does the inspection involve?

The following steps are completed when a compressed air cylinder is re-tested:

  • Discharge of any remaining air using a compressor
  • The valve is dismantled
  • It is sent to and collected from the official certification authority
  • Re-fitting of the valve
  • The compressed air cylinder is filled
  • The valve’s O-ring is replaced
  • A plug and seal supplied
  • A test report prepared
  • The details of the compressed air cylinder and all maintenance work carried out is logged in the Vandeputte database.

In addition to the standard re-inspection, you can also have new valves and plugs fitted. We can also carry out modifications, such as installing an excess flow valve (EFV) safety system.

In the event of your unit failing the inspection, we guarantee the disposal of the failed cylinders and provide the necessary proof that this was carried out lawfully.

The preparation of and after-care for re-inspecting compressed air cylinders, can only be carried out in our own workshop. The actual inspection is carried out in collaboration with the approved inspection body.

Which compressed air cylinders can we inspect?

All compressed air cylinders for breathing air can be re-inspected.

The re-inspection process is not brand-dependant. Following inspection, steel cylinders can be sandblasted on the inside and repainted, if required.
