When is flame-retardant fall protection indispensable?

Flame-retardant fall protection

Work at height invariably comes with risks. But when carrying out welding and grinding work at height you are facing an even greater challenge.

In addition to the fall risk, workers also need to be mindful of the fire hazard and spatter and sparks which damage or cause the fall protection to melt.

Which is why flame-retardant fall protection is indispensable when carrying out welding and grinding work at height.

Working safely at height

Carrying out work at height comes with its own share of risks. Which is why wearing heat-resistant and flame-retardant fall protection is paramount in situations where workers are exposed to flames, heat or flammable materials, whilst there is also a risk of falling from heights. Also referred to as work at height whilst performing hot works.

Protection against fire hazard and equipment melting

When carrying out welding and grinding work, sparks and spatters are released which may damage the fall protection devices. Traditional fall protection devices that are not flame-retardant may melt and compromise the worker’s protection. Just a single spark or spatter is all it takes to damage the equipment.

Flame-retardant fall protection is designed to delay (retard) flames and to stop them from spreading, which drives down the risk of burns and fire-related accidents. The fall protection is made from heat-resistant materials, such as Nomex®, Kevlar® or modacryl. These are better able to withstand heat and exposure to high temperatures than traditional materials such as polyester or polyamide.
